Invisible Aligners

What is Invisible Aligners?

Invisible aligners are transparent and removable orthodontic trays designed to correct dental misalignment and bite issues, providing a functional and aesthetic smile. Over the past two decades, they have revolutionised orthodontics by offering a more convenient and comfortable way to straighten teeth.

This treatment is especially popular among adults who prefer a discreet option and younger patients who benefit from its quick adaptation period. The aligners are custom-made using advanced 3D technology to plan tooth movements with precision. Patients change their aligners approximately every seven days, gradually shifting their teeth into the desired position.

For optimal results, aligners must be worn for at least 22 hours a day, only removing them for meals and oral hygiene. In some cases, small composite attachments are placed on the teeth to enhance treatment accuracy. Compared to traditional braces, invisible aligners provide a hygienic, comfortable, and efficient orthodontic solution.

What are the steps for Invisible Aligners?

  • 01

    First Visit

The first visit with the orthodontist is key to determining if aligners are the best option for you. During this consultation, the specialist will evaluate your malocclusion through an intraoral and extraoral examination. This initial contact will allow them to understand the condition of your teeth and determine if this treatment is the most suitable for you. Furthermore, in this appointment, you will be provided with an indicative budget and you will be able to resolve any doubts you have about the procedure.

  • 02

    Orthodontic Study

If you accept the budget and decide to begin with the treatment, the next step is to carry out a detailed study of your mouth. In our clinic, we have all the necessary equipment to perform the diagnostic tests without you needing to travel to another center. The objective of this study is to obtain a precise diagnosis of your malocclusion and design a personalized treatment plan. To do this, various tests are performed, such as intraoral and extraoral photographs, a digital scan of your mouth, and X-rays, including panoramic and cephalometric radiographs.

  • 03

    3D Visualisation

Once the study is complete, we send all the documentation to the aligner manufacturer, who provides us with a 3D virtual model. This model allows us to plan every micro-movement of the teeth until perfect alignment is achieved. In this appointment, you will be able to visualise the final result of your treatment in detail before starting it. As it is a completely digital process, we can make adjustments and optimise the treatment plan to suit your needs.

  • 04

    Start of Treatment

With the treatment plan approved, it's time to get started. In this phase, the attachments are placed – these are small composite blobs the same colour as your tooth that are bonded to some teeth to improve the effectiveness of the aligner. You'll also receive detailed instructions on how to put in and take out the aligners correctly, and we'll give you the first three sets of trays for you to begin your treatment.

  • 05

    Regular Check-ups

Every four to six weeks, you'll need to come in for a check-up with your orthodontist to assess how the treatment is progressing. At each visit, you'll be given new sets of aligners, which you'll need to change approximately every seven to ten days from the comfort of your own home. These appointments are brief, lasting about 15 to 20 minutes, but they're essential to ensure that the treatment is moving forward correctly and within the estimated timeframe.

  • 06

    Refinement

Throughout the treatment, all the aligners are manufactured at once according to the initial plan. However, in some cases, it's necessary to make small additional adjustments to perfect the dental alignment. In these instances, new sets of aligners are requested in a process known as refinement. Depending on each patient, the number of extra trays can vary.

  • 07

    Retention Phase

Once the treatment is finished, it's essential to maintain the results you've achieved. To do this, retainers are fitted to prevent the teeth from moving back to their original position. There are two types of retainers: removable Essix retainers, which look like a clear aligner and should be worn 24 hours a day for the first month and only at night from the second month onwards, and fixed retainers, which are thin wires bonded to the inner surface of the teeth. The retention phase is key to keeping your smile aligned in the long term.

  • 08

    Post-treatment Check-ups

Once the retention phase has begun, check-ups are scheduled progressively every one, three, six, and twelve months. During these appointments, the orthodontist will verify that the treatment results are being maintained and will be able to detect any problems related to your oral health in good time.

Popular questions about Invisible Aligners

How long should I wear the aligners each day?

At least 22 hours per day. They should only be removed for eating and brushing your teeth.

Do aligners cause pain?

They are generally painless, though mild pressure may be felt initially, indicating that the teeth are moving correctly.

How long does the treatment last?

Treatment duration varies but typically ranges from 6 to 24 months.

What happens if I lose an aligner?

Contact your orthodontist immediately. You may either progress to the next aligner or require a replacement.

Can I drink liquids while wearing aligners?

Only water is recommended. Hot or coloured drinks can warp or stain them.

How do I maintain my results after treatment?

To prevent teeth from shifting back, retainers—either removable or fixed—should be worn after treatment.

Can I wear invisible aligners if I have bruxism?

Yes, unless your bruxism is severe. Inform your orthodontist for appropriate guidance.

Can I smoke while wearing aligners?

Occasional smoking is best done without aligners to avoid staining and odour. Frequent smokers should wear them but clean them more often.

Can I wear invisible aligners if I have periodontitis?

Yes, as long as the condition is treated and under control. Unlike fixed braces, aligners apply gentler pressure, reducing gum inflammation risks.

Can I wear invisible aligners if I have implants, crowns, or veneers?

Yes, aligners are compatible with implants, though implants themselves will not move. Crowns and veneers may need replacement post-treatment, depending on tooth movement.
