Gum Treatments
Comprehensive examination
Book AppointmentIt is characterised by the progressive destruction of the bone surrounding the roots of the teeth. This is an infectious disease caused by bacteria that infiltrate below the gum line, leading to what are known as periodontal pockets. If left untreated, it can result in complete tooth loss. The goal of periodontal treatment is to halt bone loss and maintain the teeth in the mouth for as long as possible.
Gingivitis is the inflammation of the gums. It occurs due to the buildup of bacterial plaque, with a direct relationship between the amount of plaque and the severity of the gingivitis.
If gingivitis is left untreated over time, it can progress to periodontal disease.
Our role as specialists is to diagnose these conditions. To do so, a thorough periodontal examination is necessary, and based on the results of this examination, we will determine the appropriate treatment.
Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing: This procedure is indicated in the early stages of the disease or as an initial treatment in more advanced stages. It is a meticulous technique involving the proper removal of bacterial plaque and tartar that has accumulated below the gum line.
Periodontal Surgery: This technique is indicated in more advanced stages, where thorough cleaning of the roots is more challenging. The aim is to access the entire root surface to clean it adequately, thereby improving the health of the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth.
Periodontal Maintenance: After periodontal treatments, ongoing maintenance is essential. Depending on the severity of each case and the patient’s habits, maintenance should be carried out every 3 to 6 months. For example, a smoker or someone with poor oral hygiene may require more frequent periodontal maintenance sessions.
Periodontal Plastic Surgery: Within periodontal surgery, there are various procedures we perform to maintain the harmony of the smile and improve gingival aesthetics. These include aesthetic crown lengthening techniques (for very small teeth), correction of a gummy smile (where too much gum is visible when smiling), alignment of gum margins (to create balance in the gum line), and mucogingival surgery techniques to cover exposed tooth roots.
